Description:
Located about 20-minutes south of haliburton Village on Gelert Road
(the former County Road 1), Snowdon
Park is a wonderful place to spot the tracks of deer, fisher, otter,
fox, and perhaps – and if you’re lucky – the animals themselves. The
terrain is primarily flat, with several short, side trails and loops
traversing through a swamp, fen complex, wetlands and hardwood forest.
A portion of the trail is wheelchair accessible and leads to a platform
which overlooks a shallow, open-water marsh.
Snowdon Park's
self-guided trail of about 3 km is quite level and an easy
walk and
winds through an upland mixed forest and presents excellent examples of
wetlands, from a shallow open water marsh, adjacent to a viewing
platform to a large fen complex and a hardwood
forest swamp. The platform is a lovely spot to
be just before sunset, because the sun
sets on the far side of the marsh making for lovely photo ops. This
also applies during the Winter months, too.
Watch for birds such
as Ravens, Gray Jays, Blue jays, Nuthatches, wild Turkeys, various
species of Woodpeckers and Chickadees.
Winter
Green Maple Syrup Barn
Just a
short hop further down County Road 1 on the right-hand side is
Wintergreen Maple Syrup Barn. If you enjoy pancakes, you won't want to
miss their all-day breakfast. You will also enjoy barbecue hot dogs and
hamburgers grilled outside. Lining the many shelves inside are dozens
of jars of preserves, jams and jellies made from blueberry, raspberry
maple syrups, strawberrys and many other flavours. During the summer
they are open 7 days a week, and at other times of the year they have
strawberry and blueberry socials, and weekly jazz and blues sessions.
Check the Haliburton Echo, The County Voice or the Minden Times for
more details during the summer, or call them at 705 286-2254.
Haliburton
Outdoors Association Fish Hatchery
The Fish
Hatchery is a
couple of kms down Gelert Road, at the traffic light by the CF-100 jet
mounted on the petisal. Drop in and have a look at the indoor breeding
tanks containing lake trout, and the famous relic from the
last ice age, the Haliburton Gold Trout which cannot be found anywhere
else in the World!
