A recent note from
Tanya, one of the owners of Winterdance, contained this information:
Most of our
pups are born in the fall, and they won't start running in the team
until the following winter after their 1st birthday. All of
our dogs live in a 5000 sq ft indoor heated kennel, not outside in
doghouses. We have large exercise yards for them to go out
and play/socialize in. We have approximatly 120 dogs that number is
fairly static right now.
It
is normal that
adult Huskies may not be very friendly to young, small pups. At about 4
months of age, the pups are introduced to senior dogs in order to
instill some confidence. This is an important time in their young
lives. It also will help the pups to stay in shape and to burn-off some
of their extra energy, and it's an opportunity for them to "socialize"
with the older Huskies.
Female Huskies are normally
bred during the Spring months of May and June before the Summer months,
when the Haliburton Highlands temperatures can get quite hot and humid.
In the Summer, our temperatures can be very warm, especially for
thick-coated Huskies. However, the warm temperatures make it easy for
the puppies to stay warm. The pups will be six-months old by the time
Winter arrives, and they will be old enough to begin some initial
training. This includes placing the young dogs in their harnesses so
that they become accustomed to the feeling.
